Sclerotherapy for Reticular & Spider Veins
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment designed to visibly reduce reticular and spider veins, those fine, web-like or bluish veins often seen on the legs. Using a gentle injectable solution, this treatment works to close and fade unwanted vessels, allowing your skin to appear smoother and more even-toned.
At JBH Aesthetics, sclerotherapy is performed by a qualified registered nurses in a calm, supportive environment, with your safety, comfort, and confidence always our priority.
What Are Reticular and Spider Veins?
Spider veins are the fine, red or purple thread-like veins that often branch across the thighs, calves, or ankles.
Reticular veins are slightly larger, bluish veins that may feed into spider veins, sitting just below the surface of the skin.
Though generally harmless, they can sometimes cause mild aching or cosmetic concern. Sclerotherapy remains one of the most effective and proven treatments to address both.
How Sclerotherapy Works
During the procedure, a very fine needle is used to inject a medical solution directly into the targeted vein. This solution causes the vein wall to collapse and seal closed. Over time, the treated vein is naturally absorbed by the body and fades from view. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick sting or light pressure, and many find the treatment more comfortable than expected.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Consultation: Your clinician will begin with a detailed consultation to assess your veins, discuss your medical history, and determine if sclerotherapy is suitable for you.
Treatment: Small amounts of solution are carefully injected into the visible veins. Each session usually lasts between 30–45 minutes.
Post-Treatment Care: Compression stockings are applied immediately after treatment to help the veins close and promote healthy circulation. Most clients can resume light daily activities straight away.
Aftercare & Recovery
To achieve the best results, we recommend:
Wearing compression stockings as directed (usually for one to two weeks)
Avoiding intense exercise, saunas, and hot baths for 48 hours
Walking regularly to support blood flow and healing
Avoiding direct sun exposure on treated areas
Some mild redness, bruising, or itchiness is normal and will subside within a few days. Fading occurs gradually over several weeks, with continued improvement seen over time.
Results
Spider and reticular veins fade progressively within 4–8 weeks
Several sessions may be required for optimal results
Once treated, veins generally do not return — however, new veins may form over time
Maintenance treatments can help preserve smooth, even-toned skin
Risks and Considerations
All medical and cosmetic procedures carry some degree of risk. While complications from sclerotherapy are uncommon, possible side effects may include:
Temporary bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection sites
Mild tenderness or itching
Small brown lines or spots (pigmentation) where veins were treated
Matting (fine new veins) near treated areas
Allergic reaction to the sclerosing solution (rare)
Inflammation or small blood clots in the treated vein (superficial thrombophlebitis)
Ulceration or scarring (very rare)
Your clinician will discuss these risks in detail during your consultation and provide personalised aftercare to minimise them. If any unexpected symptoms occur after treatment, you should contact the clinic promptly for review.
