The cause of dark circles depends on the type of dark circle. Dark circles can appear as brown circles, as black shadows, or blue-dark circles.
Causes of brown-dark circles
Under eye circles that are brown or reddish-brown can be caused by hyperpigmentation (an uneven production of pigment cells), overexposure to the sun or hormonal changes. It can also be triggered by excessive rubbing of the eyes or be due to allergies.
Causes of black circles
Black or dark shadows under the eyes are usually caused by loss of skin elasticity, which may be triggered by dehydration, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, or as a natural result of skin ageing. Those with genetically deeper tear troughs are also more likely to experience dark shadowing under the eyes.
Causes of blue-dark circles
Blue dark circles can be caused by thinning skin around the eyes, a lack of sleep, high stress levels, poor diet or skin dehydration. They may also coincide with puffiness around the eyes. Paler skin tones are more likely to experience stubborn blue-dark circles.
-
Eye cream helps to brighten dark circles, minimise puffiness and visibly reduce wrinkles around the eye (like crow’s feet). Because the skin of the eye area is thinner than the rest of the face, eye creams are designed to offer intense hydration and deliver benefits specific to the delicate under eye area.
-
Applying eye cream to the eyelids or eyelashes increases the risk of getting cream in your eyes and irritating them. It is best to apply eye cream under your eyes, along the cheekbone and outer browbone.
