SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense Serum is an oil-free salicylic acid serum formulated for oily, blemish-prone and ageing skin. It combines salicylic acid, glycolic acid and LHA to help decongest pores, refine skin texture and visibly improve uneven tone. This glycolic and salicylic acid serum also supports skin renewal for a smoother-looking complexion.
-
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) widely used in skincare for its exfoliating properties. It penetrates deep into pores to help remove excess oil and dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of clogged pores and blemishes. By supporting natural skin renewal, a serum with salicylic acid can also visibly improve skin texture and the look of fine lines.
-
A salicylic acid serum like Blemish + Age Defense can be used in both morning and evening skincare routines and may be applied daily, depending on individual tolerance to exfoliating ingredients.
1. How to apply a salicylic acid serum:
To use Blemish + Age Defense Serum correctly, apply it to clean, dry skin after using a facial cleanser. Dispense a few drops onto your fingertips and press the serum evenly across the face and neck, allowing it to absorb fully before following with a hydrating moisturiser. When applying the serum in the morning, always finish with a broad‑spectrum sunscreen as the final step in your routine.2. Frequency of use:
Blemish + Age Defense Serum can be applied morning and night, with flexibility to use it once or twice daily depending on your comfort with exfoliating acids. If you’re new to ingredients such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid, starting every second night, preferably in the evening, can help the skin adjust more comfortably. As tolerance builds, you can progress to daily use and eventually incorporate both morning and evening application. Always finish morning use with a broad‑spectrum, high‑SPF sunscreen.3. How much salicylic acid serum to apply:
When deciding how much acid serum to use, a light, controlled application is sufficient for effective layering. Typically, 4-5 drops provide enough coverage for the face and neck without overuse. Applying more than needed does not enhance results and may increase the likelihood of discomfort, so a measured amount helps maintain balance while supporting the rest of your skincare steps. -
Start slowly at 1-2 times per week, before building up to daily use. Overusing the serum may cause irritation and dehydrated skin especially if you have sensitive or dry skin which may only tolerate using salicylic acid 1-2 times a week. You should avoid layering with other strong exfoliating products and always follow with a moisturiser and apply a high-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, as salicylic acid can increase sun sensitivity.

The SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age Defense Salicylic Acid Serum is versatile and suitable for oily, combination and blemish-prone skin. It's also beneficial as an anti-ageing skincare product as an alternative to retinol products.
Blemish-prone skin: Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells, excess oil and impurities, targeting clogged pores that contribute to acne-prone skin and congestion.
Oily and combination skin:The blend of hydroxy-acids helps in managing excess sebum production by penetrating deep into the pores and purifying the skin. This also helps reduce the appearance of pores and remove excess shine common in oily skin types.
Mature skin:By gently lifting dead skin cells and impurities, Blemish + Age Serum helps support skin cell turnover that can slow down with age. This helps visibly reducing ageing skin concerns like fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, for firmer, healthier-looking skin.
For dry and sensitive skin types looking for an exfoliating product, the Blemish + Age serum may be too strong for regular use.

No, Blemish + Age Defense Serum cannot be used with retinol in the same routine. Using retinol and salicylic acid at the same time may be too harsh for your skin and lead to adverse reactions. If you want to use both retinol and salicylic acid, alternate between the two, swapping out the products every other day or, if your skin can tolerate it, use a salicylic acid serum in the morning and retinol at night.
-
Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), is great for exfoliating and targeting breakouts. Here are some ingredients that often work well with it, keeping in mind that individual skin reactions can vary:
Hyaluronic acid: A humectant that draws moisture into the skin, helping to counter any potential dryness from salicylic acid.
Ceramides: Help to restore and maintain the skin's protective moisture barrier, which can be compromised by exfoliation.
Glycerin: Another humectant that hydrates and supports the skin moisture barrier.
-
You shouldn't use the Blemish and Age Serum with other harsh ingredients like retinol, or combine with products already containing very high concentrations of salicylic acid, unless recommended otherwise.

Yes, salicylic acid serum is widely used to help reduce the appearance of blackheads. As a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid penetrates deep into pores to dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells that contribute to congestion. Regular use can help visibly minimise clogged pores and promote a clearer-looking complexion.
